Inside Track

Greyhound racing is a simple concept. Six greyhounds chase a mechanical lure around a track - always in a anti-clockwise direction - over varying distances and one passes the winning post first. But the sport itself is made up of number of organisations and authorities that can seem bewildering to the newcomer. So just who is who....this should help demystify the people behind the sport.

THE NATIONAL GREYHOUND RACING CLUB (NGRC) - www.ngrc.org.uk

The NGRC is responsible for the integrity and security of racing at Stadia that operate under the NGRC Rules of Racing.

NGRC greyhound racing is run at 31 tracks generating billions of pounds of revenue for off-course betting and millions on-course. The policing role includes the work of regional stipendiary stewards taking random drug tests and policing all aspects of the sport and those involved in it.

THE BRITISH GREYHOUND RACING BOARD (BGRB) - www.thedogs.co.uk

The Board is the representative body for greyhound racing under the Rules of the NGRC in the United Kingdom. It has been chaired by Lord Lipsey since December 2003. He came to the post with a considerable knowledge of and involvement in greyhound racing. He is also a Trustee of the Retired Greyhound Trust and a member of the welfare body the Greyhound Forum. He is patron of Greyhounds in Need and of Greyhound Rescue West of England.

Directors of the Board include greyhound owners, breeders, trainers, track owners and the Senior Steward of the NGRC.

All rule changes, licence and registration issues must be discussed with the Board, which primarily exists to promote the best interests of greyhound racing. The Board takes the lead in political and commercial matters impacting on the sport. The Board is also actively involved in greyhound welfare, marketing and the development of IT.

The Board enjoys close links with national animal welfare groups and has been working with the Government department Defra on the forthcoming Animal Welfare Bill.

THE BRITISH GREYHOUND RACING FUND - (BGRF) - www.bgrf.org.uk

The British Greyhound Racing Fund is the official funding body for NGRC licensed greyhound racing in Britain. The Fund covers all aspects of integrity, welfare and development of the sport.

Since 1992, when the Fund was set up, over £28m has been collected and distributed to the sport. In 2005, the BGRF expects to collect around £10.8m from bookmakers' contributions. This money will be invested in the sport across a wide range of projects aimed at improvement and promotion of greyhound racing.

The Fund has played an impartial role in making greyhound racing the great success it is today and looks forward to a bright future.

THE GREYHOUND BREEDERS FORUM - www.breedersforum.org

The affairs of the Forum are conducted entirely by volunteers annual elected from the membership roll. Since inauguration the Forum has promoted annual Greyhound Festivals and champions the British-bred greyhound globally. The showpiece races which carry more than £30,000 in prize money and include prizes for the breeder are the Breeders Forum Produce Stakes held at Hall Green and Swindon stadia.

Bob Gilling is the Breeder's representative on the BGRB.

The success of the Forum is dependent on a healthy membership. The annual fee is £5 and those that are not available for meetings are still welcome.

THE GREYHOUND TRAINER'S ASSOCIATION - (GTA)

The GTA is the only body representing greyhound trainers. The Chairman since 1999 is trainer John Haynes who is also the representative for trainers on the Board of the BGRB. The GTA also organises the Trainers' Championship which in 2005 was held at Perry Barr in April. It incorporates the top six trainers from the previous years racing and was won by Charlie Lister.

THE GREYHOUND WRITERS ASSOCIATION (GWA)

The GWA was formed with a membership of 31 in 1982 by the late Harry Lloyd and Bob Betts with the first meeting held at the old GRA training establishment at Northaw, Potters Bar.

Bob Betts remains as hon. sec. supported by a committee of Floyd Amphlett (Greyhound Star), Adrian Hunt (Daily Telegraph), Jonathan Kay (Racing Post) and Jim Austin (Racing Post). The GWA meets at least three times a year and the main duty is casting votes for the Greyhound of the Year Award. It also gathers to choose the best middle distance contenders to meet in the annual Select Stakes over 500 metres (one off) at Nottingham.

The Trust is a national charity and is funded through voluntary donations from the public and also from the greyhound racing industry. In 2005 the sport gave £1.3m towards the work of the RGT. The Trust has more than 60 branches - some with rehoming kennels across the country. In 2004 the RGT rehome some 3000 greyhounds.
